Department of Software Engineering LogoWelcome to the Department of Software Engineering

If you are interested in creating your own applications and tools, integrating different components from web-based front ends to high-performance database backend systems, optimising algorithms in order to increase overall system performance, designing user interfaces and interaction concepts for next generation systems, then you are right. Welcome to the Department of Software Engineering, where we aim at teaching our students all of the above, and much more.

What Software Engineering is About...

Software Engineering is a branch of Information Technology oriented towards the creation and customisation of computer programs for a wide variety of purposes. It is about developing the programs that make computers useful, as well as integrating different technologies into scalable and efficient software solutions.

The successful Software Engineer is able to

  • analyse domain requirements to ensure the software fulfills the purpose
  • translate software requitements into flexible architectures and designs
  • develop (i.e. program) software components and applications according to industry standards using the most efficient algorithms and implementation patterns
  • ensure program functionality by means of structured validation, verification and testing
  • customise and maintain running systems according to changing requirements
  • deploy software components and applications, ready for operation in the end-users setting

To master these tasks, the Software Engineer employs a variety of tools and techniques, ranging from traditional programming languages and highly specialised development environments and libraries to testing tools.

In addition to the ability to learn quickly the essential features of an application in any area of client needs, excellent communications and technical writing skills are equally essential.

Successful Software Engineers also possess a good command of time and project management skills with special regard to managing complex software development efforts.

Our Programmes

The Department of Software Engineering currently offers two programmes in Software Engineering, namely the

In addition to these core programmes in Software Engineering, we are also offering the joint Bachelor in Geo-Information Technology programme in cooperation with the Department of Land Management. Please visit their web pages for further details.

Our Staff

Our international academic staff is currently composed of qualified lecturers from Namibia, the SADC region, as well as European countries.

Where to find us...

We are located on the 4th floor in Poly Heights on the main campus in Windhoek, where we are readily available for interactions with and support of students, partners and guests.
